Lions Youth Exchange Students Enjoy a Taste of Somerset

Thanks to the generosity of Lions Sylvia and Keith Cook, we were the only Club in the SW District to host a Youth Exchange Student. Sylvia and Keith had actually offered to host a student.  Minda from Norway arrived at Bristol Airport on Monday 23rd July and from the start was friendly, engaging and very appreciative of all that was arranged and provided for her. Minda enjoyed a varied programme of activities and events which were planned by Sylvia and Keith, along with Lion Colin and DG Lion Sally Marsh of Radstock and Midsomer Norton Lions Club, W District, who were hosting two students, Roao from Brazil and Raynaldi from Indonesia. Cheddar Vale Lions Club sponsored the visits to Wells, Cheddar and Wedmore on Wednesday 25th July. The Students and their Hosts were greeted by the Wells Town Crier, Len Sweales, who amused and bemused them! They all loved the architecture of the Cathedral, Vicars Close and the Old Deanery. A bit of mooching around the market before the team headed to Cheddar. Here they sampled real Cheddar cheese, explored the caves and the amazing geological features of the gorge… including the Lion Rock and our Lion’s wishing well.

Later, all gathered at The New Inn, Wedmore for a meal and to experience the quirky game of skittles. This was definitely a first for the students!  Joao won the “Killer” round for the students! Thanks to all who were able to come along to meet our YE Students and enjoy a meal (and skittles) that evening. Other events during the hosting period were sponsored by Clevedon Lions, Glastonbury & Street Lions, Yeo Valley Lions and Weston-super-Mare Lions. We are grateful to all for their support. Most of all, thanks to Sylvia and Keith who hosted Minda and had a very busy, but hopefully very enjoyable time.

The Lions International Youth Exchange is an annual programme, which culminates with 40 Youth Exchange Students from all over the world, hosted by Lions Clubs all over the UK, joining together at a Youth Camp.  This year it was held in Hastings from 31 July  – 9th August.
